When I first started riding, I was terrified. I fell off thirteen times the first year. My friends would chatter excitedly on the way to the barn about riding a new horse or going out on a trail ride, but I was scared and had no confidence. I only wanted to ride Galen, the safest school horse, because I was so afraid of falling off yet again. And if my trainer had me canter, I would have blisters on my hands by the end of the ride because I was holding so tightly onto the reins. It was an awful feeling.
But little by little, I developed an independent seat.
I learned how to sit the trot and balance in the canter. My seat connected. My hands softened. My horse became responsive and calm. And that terrible fear was replaced by confidence, joy, and a deep connection with my horse.
Today, riding is my passion. I compete in the Grand Prix with my horse, Harvey, and I’ve dedicated my life to helping riders like you discover the magic of riding with balance and harmony.

If your horse is on the forehand → You’re leaning forward and balancing on the reins.
If your horse is lazy → You’re gripping and nagging with your leg.
If your horse is crooked → You’re sitting crooked.
If your horse is tense and nervous → You’re holding your breath and stiff.
When I was learning to ride, and falling off all the time, I relied way too much on my hands – making my horse tense and nervous. I designed this Rider Position Scale, to teach you where to start:
The foundation of the correct rider position
The main connection point between you and your horse.
Keep you grounded and balanced.
They will resolve themselves 😃.
I’ve found that the secret to fixing your position is developing the correct fitness routine.
After breaking my left collar bone, my trainer was constantly yelling at me to bring my left shoulder back. It wasn’t until I worked with a physical therapist and learned to stretch and strengthen my shoulder off of the horse that I was able to do it in the saddle.
I’ve trained thousands of adult amateur riders. And the successful ones ALL follow a fitness routine.
I’ve developed exercises specific for riders, so that you can mimic and improve your rider position, even when you’re not in the saddle!
Develop muscle strength and coordination.
