Developing Harvey’s Trot Work

Dressage is hard, and often we can lose sight of the progress that we’re making in the day to day work. It’s a long journey, and a lot of blood, sweat, and tears can go into the training process. But don’t worry – with time and patience, you can and will reach your goals!

So, in this week’s video, I wanted to give you some inspiration for your riding and give you the special treat of seeing a brief trot-work schooling session with my Grand Prix horse, Harvey. I’ve had him since he was five, and though he’s always shown talent, training him was not always linear or easy. As a youngster, he was very hot, and often there were times when I just had to take a step back and give him more time. Now he’s 11, and his energy is much easier to handle and channel and it is especially fun since he knows all the Grand Prix movements! Harvey really is a very special horse and I feel honored each day that I get to ride him.

As I mentioned before, training horses takes years of training and patience, but in the end, it is all worth it! Probably my favorite part of Dressage is the bond that you develop with your horse over the years and years of training. It is an incredible feeling when you and your horse move together as one. I hope you enjoy watching Harvey’s trot work! We’re currently working on transitions between Piaffe and Passage as well as within the trot, and he’s really starting to get the hang of things! Remember, while talent does help, this is the result of training for the last six years!

I hope this session gives you some inspiration helps you see how when you make a plan and have the patience, you can and will reach your goals!

Happy Riding!

Amelia
