What can we say about the half halt that hasn’t already been said!? The honest answer to that is a WHOLE LOT! The half-halt is something that evolves and changes depending on every situation you use it in. I often think of new ways of describing what it is, but here’s a metaphor that might help.
The half-halt is punctuation in your riding. It’s like a comma within a sentence! You’re gathering the energy, not removing it. It serves the purpose of indicating to your horse that something is coming up, be it an upward transition, a downward transition, or a corner; it can be MANY things. It’s something that gets easier with feel and experience, but it’s an essential part of riding! To go back to our metaphor, if you just wrote everything down without any punctuation, it would be MUCH more difficult to understand!
This week’s video is a snippet from a lesson my husband, German, gave to my mom, JoElyn, where they’re explicitly drilling the half halt! My husband has a great way of breaking things down when it comes to riding, so I hope you find this helps. Let me know in the comments if it does!
Thanks for watching and happy riding!
