Today we’re talking about three things you can do to improve your riding.
The first one is frequency—just riding more frequently. The more frequently you ride, the better you’re going to get. Frequency also helps with fear issues—the more frequently you ride, the less fearful you’re going to be because it becomes just a habit and a pattern, making it less of a big deal. So that’s number one.
The second thing you can do to improve your riding is fitness. Going to the gym, working with a physical therapist, and exercising are hugely important so that when you get on your horse, your body does what your brain tells it to do. All of my students are really diligent about going to the gym, working with a trainer, and focusing on their symmetry, strength, and flexibility. All those things are super important. You have to be aware of your body and its asymmetries, and it’s easier to work on this when you’re not riding so that when you do get on your horse, you’re ready. We expect so much of our horses physically and expect them to be straight, so you have to be straight and fit as well, including cardiovascular fitness.
The third thing you can do is education. Taking lessons, going to clinics, and watching videos! I try to take as many lessons and clinics as I can with my horses. I also try to get videos taken of me riding and really study and watch those videos, it’s super helpful.
I hope you find these tips helpful!
Happy Riding!
