Dressage is much more than riding patterns in an arena—it’s about fostering a deep partnership with your horse and developing them into a balanced, happy athlete. Whether you’re a beginner or advancing through the levels, understanding the fundamental principles of Dressage is essential for success.
In this video, we’ll cover three key elements of Dressage training: rider position, arena geometry, and the Training Scale. These principles form the cornerstone of a harmonious and effective Dressage practice.
What Is Dressage? The word “Dressage” originates from the French term for “training.” According to the FEI (Fédération Équestre Internationale), the goal of Dressage is to develop a horse into a “happy athlete” through harmonious education. This process cultivates a horse that is calm, supple, balanced, and flexible, while also confident, attentive, and eager to work.
In essence, Dressage is about building a partnership where horse and rider communicate effortlessly, achieving movements with lightness and grace.
The Three Foundations of Dressage
- Rider Position: A balanced rider is essential for a balanced horse. Focus on maintaining proper alignment (ear, shoulder, hip, heel), using your seat to follow the horse’s motion, and applying aids through your legs and reins with precision.
- Arena Geometry: Accurate patterns, like the 20-meter circle, develop the horse’s rhythm and balance. Precise geometry ensures your horse remains focused and responsive while building the foundation for advanced movements.
- Training Scale: The six levels of the Training Scale are designed to guide you and your horse through the training process. The scale starts with rhythm and tempo to enhance the horse’s gaits, then moves to suppleness for relaxation and bend, and then connection for a smooth flow of energy from the hindquarters through the back and to the mouth.
Dressage is a rewarding discipline that combines both artistry and athleticism. By focusing on rider position, mastering geometry, and following the Training Scale, you will set you and your horse up for success.
