Your horse needs you to be confident! And even if you’re not feeling confident, you need to pretend that you are confident for your horse!
Recently, I was listening to a podcast about public speaking. This podcast stated that almost everyone gets nervous when speaking in public. The difference between a good public speaker and a bad one is that a good one fakes that they are confident.
In riding, it’s the same. Good riders have mastered the ability to fake their confidence and take control of the horse even when they are not feeling completely confident. Horses are prey animals and they need their rider to be confident. So even if you are not confident, you need to “fake it until you make it.”

A technique I use a lot for fear is 4 Square Rhythm Breathing. You breathe in for 4 seconds, hold for 4 seconds, out for for 4 seconds, hold for 4 seconds, and as on. This allows me to get into the Rhythm of my horse’s breath and become more connected.
Using your Groundwork toolbox when things get a bit shaky is another way to keep you safe and build your confidence. Getting your horse bending and teaching them how to drift their hindquarters from the ground is an excellent way to manage your horses in unsure situations.
Another thing that you might find helpful is to say some confidence-building affirmations before getting on your horse. Here’s a poem that I wrote that you might find helpful to recite before getting on:
A promise to my horse!
I Promise to be present.
I am releasing my tension and stress and setting intention to have a productive and positive ride.
I promise to be confident and clear, for I am your leader.
I am strong and brave.
When you are fearful, I will take care of you and keep us safe.
I am the leader.
I am a good rider.
I have tools to direct your energy in any situation.
I trust you, and you will submit to my direction.
Today I am grateful for the privilege to ride you.
Today I bring confidence, positive energy, and a growth mindset.
Today I call the shots and you will willingly abide by my wishes.
Thank you for giving me your trust.
Thank you for releasing your body and mind to my direction.
Thank you for looking to me as your confident leader.
Thank you for being an honest and forgiving partner.
