The leg-yield is an important dressage movement that is introduced at first level. For a correct leg yield, the horse moves sideways while staying parallel to the long side and with a slight inside flexion.
Some common mistakes in the dressage leg-yield are the rider leaning to the side, the horse falling through the shoulder, and the rider over bending the horse’s neck.
In this video I’m riding a horse that is just learning the leg-yield, you’ll see some great examples of what happens when you’re teaching a horse, like when the hind legs trail, and how I deal with these issues by half-halting on my outside rein, pushing with my inside leg, and using the whip to help.
Happy Riding!
